Places of Interest

silent valley
Silent Valley. The Silent Valley is a Mountain Park situated in the high Mournes and features a dam ringed by dramatic Mountain panoramas and the famous Mourne wall located in the U-shaped valley of the Kilkeel river.
The Mourne Mountains
The Mourne Mountains. There are 12 peaks over 2000 feet high, including Northern Ireland's highest mountain, Slieve Donard. The Mournes are unusual in that their summits are grouped together in a compact area only 7 miles in breadth. The Mourne Mountains - famous the world over through Percy French's song "Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea".
Cranfield Beach
Spelga Dam. The idea of reservoir and dam in The Mournes was first conceived in 1894 and finally built and developed between 1953 and 1957. (Photo as shown currently for silent Vally).
Cranfield Beach
Cranfield Beach. Cranfield beach is set in an idyllic location at the mouth of Carlingford Lough, with the majestic Mourne Mountains as a dramatic backdrop. The long, south facing beach offers excellent facilities for all visitors whether it be for a gentle stroll or for more strenuous water based activities and provides the perfect setting for the family with a wide expanse of sand and clean bathing water. Cranfield has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, which is given to beaches and marinas across Europe that meet strict criteria for both water quality and environmental management.
Cranfield Beach
Kilkeel. It is our nearest town (3 miles), its picturesque harbour features an RNLI lifeboat station and one of the largest fishing fleets in Ireland . Recent improvements have seen the introduction of moorings for private, sea-going motor cruises etc. The town contains the ruins of a 14th Century church and fort, winding streets and terraced shops which are complimented by larger well established businesses – e.g. a hotel, catering outlets, household stores and a large supermarket. There is also a swimming pool and health spa at the leisure centre. An NITB Information Centre is located in the vicinity of the harbour at the Nautilaus Centre which also houses a fishing exhibition. Good food and drink, excellent hospitality and friendly locals are all in abundance.
Cranfield Beach
Newcastle. This really is where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea. Here you will find both Donard Park and Tollymore Forest Park, both of which have way-marked walks alongside beautiful mountains streams.
Cranfield Beach
Rostrevor Kilbroney Park has several way-marked trails through the forest, which have been declared a National Nature Reserve and more recently an Area of Special Scientific Interest. Spring 2013 saw the opening of a purpose-built mountain bike trail, making this part of Northern Ireland a world class mountain biking destination.
Cranfield Beach
Newry is a Cathedral City just 30 minutes drive away. It is a historic but lively modern city set in wonderful surroundings at the end of Carlingford Lough. The City has flourished remarkably in recent times with all kinds of commercial and administrative activity, shopping stores and malls, arts centres, galleries, a museum and busy nightlife with lots of restaurants and bars

Carol Cottage is a holiday cottage situated in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains in a designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” (AONB) in County Down, with truely breathtaking, panaramic views in all directions.

In August 2012 Carol Cottage was specifically featured in a BBC (NI) television programme regarding "the benefits and advantages of holidaying at home" (i.e. Northern Ireland).

The holiday cottage is just one and a half hours drive from either Dublin and Belfast and 30 minutes from the City of Newry. It is conveniently positioned between the fishing port/town of Kilkeel, the picturesque village of Rostrevor and the shoreline at Cranfield, with its award winning blue flag beach.

Surrounded by farmland, “Carol Cottage” is located in a quiet, rural setting and is an ideal base from which to go to the beach, fishing trips, cycle rides, horse riding, hiking and walking in the mountains or country lanes.

Well behaved dogs and small pets are welcome at Carol Cottage either inside the cottage or outside in a new, secure, purpose built dog compound and kennel area.

Carol Cottage is an idea base  from which to access Castlewellan, Rostrevor, Kilbroney Park and Davagh Forest which boast over 80km of new purpose-built mountain bike trails, making this part of Northern Ireland the next must visit mountain biking destination in the UK and Ireland.

Although Carol Cottage does not have official Disabled Access status it is "wheelchair friendly" by being all on one level.

On arrival guests will normally be met by your meet and greet host who is also usually available to help with any queries guests may have during their stay.

We are also open for short breaks all year round.
